VARC Strategy for Low

Accuracy Students

By Anastasis Academy, May 7, 2026 Most Read

Struggling with low accuracy in VARC is frustrating, especially when you feel like you understand the passage but still get questions wrong. The issue, more often than not, isn’t effort—it’s approach. VARC is less about how much you read and more about how you read and interpret.

Here’s a practical strategy to improve your accuracy.

1. Slow Down to Speed Up

Many low-accuracy students rush through passages trying to attempt more questions. This usually backfires.

Instead:

  • Read at a comfortable pace
  • Focus on understanding the author’s argument
  • Don’t move ahead unless the previous paragraph is clear

Accuracy improves when comprehension improves. Speed will follow naturally.

2. Focus on the Author’s Intent

Every RC passage has a purpose—argument, critique, explanation, or analysis.

While reading, ask:

  • What is the author trying to say?
  • Is the tone critical, neutral, or supportive?
  • What is the main idea of each paragraph?

If you miss the author’s intent, you’ll likely fall for trap options.

3. Stop Relying on Memory

Trying to remember every detail of the passage leads to confusion.

Instead:

  • Understand the structure (intro, argument, examples, conclusion)
  • Refer back to the passage when needed
  • Don’t hesitate to re-read key lines

VARC is an open-book test—use that to your advantage.

4. Learn to Eliminate Options

Most wrong answers in VARC are close to correct but slightly distorted.

Common traps include:

  • Extreme words (always, never, completely)
  • Out-of-scope ideas
  • Half-true statements

Focus on eliminating wrong options rather than finding the perfect one immediately. Often, the correct answer is the most balanced and closest to the passage.

5. Attempt Fewer Questions, But Better

If your accuracy is low, attempting more questions won’t help.

Try this:

  • Attempt 2–3 passages instead of all
  • Focus on getting 70–80% accuracy in those

It’s better to get 8 correct out of 12 than 10 correct out of 20 attempts.

6. Analyze Every Mistake Deeply

Improvement in VARC comes mostly from analysis.

After practice or mocks:

  • Re-read the passage
  • Understand why the correct option is right
  • Identify why your chosen option was wrong

Ask yourself:

  • Did I misinterpret the passage?
  • Did I fall for a trap option?
  • Did I assume something not given?

This reflection helps you avoid repeating mistakes.

7. Build Reading Habits Outside Practice

VARC skills improve with regular reading.

Read:

  • Editorials (The Hindu, Indian Express)
  • Aeon essays or long-form articles
  • Topics outside your comfort zone

Focus on understanding arguments, not just finishing the article.

8. Don’t Overcomplicate the Passage

Many students assume RCs are meant to be tricky and start overthinking. In reality, most answers are directly supported by the passage.

Stick to:

  • What is written
  • What is logically implied

Avoid adding your own opinions or external knowledge.

Final Takeaway

Low accuracy in VARC is not a permanent problem—it’s a fixable skill gap. The solution lies in better reading, smarter option elimination, and honest analysis.

Focus on understanding rather than attempting more. With consistent practice and the right approach, your accuracy will steadily improve—and so will your confidence.
