Study Like a Monk,

Perform Like a Pro:

Deep Work for CAT Prep

By Anastasis July 8 2025 Most Read

You know that feeling when you're trying to study, but your brain keeps jumping from formulas to food cravings to checking just one more message? That’s the biggest roadblock in CAT prep, not the syllabus, but the struggle to actually sit down and focus.

The truth? It’s not about how many hours you study, it’s about how deeply you focus during those hours.

If you’ve been jumping from topic to topic, studying with 27 tabs open, and wondering why the numbers won’t stick, don’t worry. What you need is a shift in how you study, not how much you study.

Let’s break it down, monk-style.

Step 1: Silence the Noise (Literally and Digitally)

You can't hit a six when there’s someone waving their hands in front of your face. That’s what Instagram and WhatsApp are doing to your prep, distracting you every few minutes.

Here’s the deal:

  • Keep your phone far, far away. Like, another-room-away.
  • Create a quiet space. No TV, no buzzing group chats.
  • Treat your study desk like a mini dojo. When you sit there, it’s study time.

You’re not being boring, you’re being smart. Distraction is the enemy of deep work.

Step 2: Focused Hours > Long Hours

Studying for six hours sounds impressive, but if you’re zoning out half the time, what’s the point?

Try this instead:

  • Break your study into 90-minute “deep work” sessions.
  • Take proper breaks after each, walk around, grab a snack, and don’t scroll endlessly.
  • During those 90 minutes? One topic. One goal. No multitasking.

Think of it like doing focused reps at the gym, you get stronger when you’re intentional, not when you flail around for hours.

Step 3: One Thing at a Time, Please

CAT has three sections. That doesn’t mean you solve QA, skim a Reading Comprehension, and do a puzzle all at once.

Here’s your mantra: Single-tasking is the new multitasking.

  • When it’s DILR time, it’s only DILR time.
  • Don’t jump between concepts because one feels “boring.”
  • Go deep into each topic. Understand it, feel it, master it.

Remember Sherlock Holmes? He didn't multitask. He obsessed, and that's why he cracked every case.

Step 4: Build Your Study Ritual (Your Brain Will Thank You)

Ever notice how athletes have that “pre-game” vibe? Headphones in. Zoned out. Locked in.

You need the same before each study session:

  • Sit down. Take a deep breath.
  • Write down what you’ll do.
  • Set a timer. Begin.

This might sound small, but it trains your brain to say, “Oh, we’re about to do real work now.” Over time, this ritual becomes a signal for maximum focus mode.

Step 5: Look Back to Move Forward

At the end of the day, don’t just shut your book and walk away like it never happened. Take a minute to reflect:

  • What did I actually learn today?
  • Where did I drift off or get stuck?
  • What will I do differently tomorrow?

Write it down. Keep it simple. This 5-minute habit makes you self-aware, and that’s half the battle won.

CAT isn’t just about who studies the most; it’s about who studies the best. Deep work isn’t some fancy productivity hack; it’s how you train your brain to focus when it matters most.

So light that metaphorical incense, put your phone on airplane mode, and lock in. Study like a monk. Perform like a pro.

Because CAT doesn’t need your 100% all the time. It just needs your 100% when it counts.
