Cracking the CAT while managing a full-time job feels like swimming upstream, doesn’t it? You barely wrap up your work, and boom—there goes your study time! Even I was juggling between office and prep, just like you, but I aced the CAT, and so can you.
Let’s dive into a strategy that actually works!
Before jumping into preparation, ask yourself: Why do you want to crack CAT? Is it for career growth, a switch, or a long-time dream? A strong why will fuel your motivation on days when work drains you and studying feels impossible. Keep this reason in mind—it’s your anchor.
Let’s be honest: You’re never going to ‘find’ time for CAT prep. You need to make it. The best way? Create a structured schedule that works for you, not against you.
Studying for 6 hours straight doesn’t always mean effective learning. Instead, try focused 2-hour study blocks with the Pomodoro Technique—50 minutes study, 10 minutes break. It keeps burnout at bay and boosts retention.
Each section of CAT needs a different approach. Here’s what works:
Think of mocks as battlefield simulations. Start with one mock per week and gradually increase the frequency. More importantly, spend twice as much time analysing your mistakes. Identify weak areas and fix them before proceeding.
There will be days when you miss studying due to work pressure—and that’s okay! Instead of feeling guilty, get back on track the next day. Consistency beats perfection. Small, steady progress is better than sporadic bursts of high-intensity study.
In the last 30 days, train your mind to be super active during your CAT slot timing. If your exam is at 2 PM, make it a habit to solve mocks or study tough topics from 2-5 PM every day. Your brain will get used to peak performance during those hours.
It’s easy to compare yourself to full-time aspirants, but remember—your work experience is an asset! Many IIMs value professionals for their real-world insights. So, don’t doubt yourself. You’re not behind; you’re just on a different path.
Eat well, sleep enough, and exercise (even if it’s just a 15-minute walk). A tired brain won’t help you ace CAT, but a well-rested one will.
Balancing work and CAT prep is tough, but it’s 100% doable with the right strategy. Stay disciplined, trust the process, and remember—it’s not about how many hours you put in but how effectively you use them.
