Another Attempt in CAT?

Learn From Past Attempts

& Preparation Strategy

By Anastasis February 22, 2025 Most Read

So, you’re back for another shot at CAT? First off, let’s get one thing straight—you’re not alone. Many aspirants take multiple attempts to crack the exam, and if you’re in the same boat, you already have an advantage: experience. But just having experience isn’t enough; it’s about using it the right way. This time, let’s turn those past mistakes into stepping stones.

Step 1: Reflect Before You Restart

Think of your previous attempt as a mock test—one that gave you invaluable insights. Ask yourself:

  • Were the concepts clear, or did mugging up take over understanding?
  • Did you manage your time well during the exam?
  • Were mock tests a friend or a foe?
  • Did you revise smartly or just endlessly shuffle through the material?

Answering these questions honestly is like running a diagnostic test on your preparation. Only then can you fix the gaps and optimise your strategy.

Step 2: Concept vs. Application – The Real Game

Let’s face it—most students know the formulas, but applying them under time pressure is where things fall apart. If your accuracy suffered last time, focus on:

  • Conceptual Clarity: Don't just memorise formulas; understand the ‘why’ behind them. If the Pythagorean theorem is a mystery, visualise it, derive it, and then apply it.
  • Selective Practice: Not all topics deserve equal attention. Identify your strong and weak areas from your past attempts and practice accordingly.

You need to sharpen your weapons (concepts) and improve your reflexes (speed and accuracy).

Step 3: Mastering Mocks – Your Reality Check

Mock tests are like test matches before the World Cup—they reveal weaknesses you wouldn’t notice otherwise. But this time, let’s be strategic:

  • Analyse, Don’t Just Attempt: If you’re taking mocks and not analysing them, you’re only doing half the work. Spend twice the time reviewing your mistakes as you do attempting the test.
  • Experiment with Strategies: Try different approaches—maybe starting with your strongest section or tackling LRDI first if that’s where you lose momentum.
  • Simulate the Real Exam: Take mocks at the same time as your actual exam slot to build mental stamina.

Step 4: Time Management – The Art of Letting Go

One of the biggest traps in CAT is getting stuck on a single question. If a question is playing hard to get, don’t be stubborn—skip it. Think of it like a buffet: just because a dish looks interesting doesn’t mean you must eat it. Pick what serves you best and move on.

A smart approach:

  • Easy → Moderate → Difficult: Start with the easiest questions to build momentum, then tackle the moderate ones, and only then, if time allows, go for the difficult ones.
  • Set Internal Timers: If you're spending more than 2-3 minutes on a single question, it’s time to cut your losses.

Step 5: Mental Resilience – The Ultimate Differentiator

CAT isn’t just about aptitude; it’s about attitude. If self-doubt creeps in, remind yourself why you started. The difference between a topper and someone who barely makes it is often mindset. Believe that this attempt will be the best.

The Best is Yet to Come

This time, don’t just prepare—prepare smarter. Learn from the past, tweak your strategy, and trust your preparation. If others can crack CAT in their second or third attempt, so can you.

So, take a deep breath, pick up your books, and let’s ace this EXAM this time.
