in 9 Months:

Resources & Study Plan

By Anastasis March 20, 2025 Most Read

Cracking the Common Admission Test (CAT) isn’t about studying harder, it’s about studying smarter. With nine months in hand, you have the perfect window to master the concepts, sharpen your problem-solving skills, and build confidence.

But without a clear roadmap, you likely feel lost. Think of your CAT prep as building a skyscraper. First, lay a strong foundation, then strengthen the framework, and finally, polish the finishing touches before the big day.

Let’s break down your preparation into manageable phases.

Month 1-2: Laying the Foundation

Before diving deep, understand the exam structure. CAT consists of three sections:

  • Verbal Ability & Reading Comprehension (VARC)
  • Data Interpretation & Logical Reasoning (DILR)
  • Quantitative Ability (QA)

Start with a diagnostic mock test to gauge your current level. It’s like taking a test drive before you start driving towards your goal, you need to know where you stand. Based on your performance, structure your initial study plan:

  • Quantitative Ability: Revisit basic math concepts from NCERT books (Class 6-10). Focus on percentages, algebra, and geometry.
  • Verbal Ability: Read newspapers (The Hindu, The Indian Express) and editorials daily to enhance comprehension and vocabulary.
  • Logical Reasoning & DI: Begin with easy puzzle books and pattern-based LR questions.
  • Mock Tests: Take one mock weekly to test and track progress and adjust strategies accordingly.

Month 3-5: Strengthening Core Concepts

Once your foundation is set, start refining your skills.

  • Quantitative Ability: Start solving higher-difficulty problems
  • Verbal Ability: Attempt 3-4 RC passages daily and build accuracy.
  • DILR: Practice sets regularly from sources online, or you can invest in any standard book.
  • Sectional Practice: Dedicate specific days to each section to ensure balanced preparation.

A strong study routine at this stage should include:

  • 3-4 hours of focused study daily
  • 1-2 sectional tests per week
  • Daily revision of key concepts
  • Peer Discussions: Engage in discussions with fellow aspirants to gain different perspectives on problem-solving.

Month 6-7: Boosting Speed & Accuracy

By now, your fundamentals should be rock solid. Shift your focus to increasing speed and accuracy.

  • Take 2-3 full-length mocks per week and analyse mistakes thoroughly.
  • Prioritise weaker areas without neglecting strong sections.
  • Experiment with different test-taking strategies (e.g., attempting easy questions first, adjusting time management).
  • Time-Bound Practice: Solve questions under timed conditions to build exam temperament.

Time yourself while practicing to simulate exam pressure. The goal is to maximise efficiency while maintaining accuracy.

Month 8-9: The Final Stretch

The last phase is all about fine-tuning and confidence-building. Here’s what you should focus on:

  • Mock tests every alternate day (both full-length & sectional)
  • Revising important formulas, concepts, and shortcut techniques
  • Avoiding new study materials—stick to what you’ve already practiced
  • Stress Management: Incorporate light exercises or meditation to keep your mind calm before the exam.

Picture yourself as a sprinter at the starting line—you’ve trained hard, and now it’s all about executing with precision.
