Analysis of the Syllabus: 

The syllabus consists of three main sections: 

1. Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension (VARC) 
2. Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning (DILR) 
3. Quantitative Aptitude (QA) 

Each section tests different skills that are vital for clearing the CAT exam. 

Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension (VARC) 

This section tests the command of the English language. The major areas that require attention are: 

• Comprehension Reading: This area requires you to read unseen passages from various topics like science, literature, business, etc and answer questions based on it. Questions are mostly about inference, tone, summary, and critical reasoning. 
• Verbal Ability: This section will include questions on sentence corrections, para-jumbles, finding odd ones, and spotting grammatical errors.

What to Focus on:

To score well in VARC, focus on reading comprehension as it carries the most weight and work on your speed and accuracy by practising diverse passages. For verbal ability, prioritise para jumbles, summary writing, and odd sentences out. Regular reading and mock tests can help you practice these topics.

Data Interpretations and Logical Reasoning (DILR) 

This section evaluates your puzzle-solving skills through data interpretation and logical reasoning questions.  

• Data Interpretation: You will face some data tables and graphs (bar graphs, line graphs, pie charts) apart from data sufficiency and missing data problems to test your data interpretation expertise. Your knowledge of percentages and ratios can help you solve these problems. 
• Logical Reasoning: LR will involve questions relating to seating arrangements, blood relations, Venn diagrams, network problems and logical sequences. Practise data sets in different formats and focus on logical puzzle-solving.

What to Focus On:

Focus on mastering the topics that carry maximum weightage, like graphs, tables, caselets in DI and puzzles, seating arrangements, games, and tournaments in LR. Develop quick strategies and improve your data interpretation skills. Focus on time management, as these questions require accuracy and speed.

Quantitative Ability (QA) 

This section is either your best friend or your worst enemy. Problems in this section revolve around your high school math. Here is what to expect in the QA section: 

• Arithmetic: The most substantial portion of this section. Important chapters are percentages, profit and loss, time and work, ratios, and averages. 
• Algebra: Go back to your high school math books and practice topics like linear equations, quadratic equations, inequalities, and functions. 
• Geometry: Make sure you have a strong fundamental knowledge of angles, triangles, circles, and menstruation. 
• Modern Math: Practice probability, permutations, combinations, and set theory. 

What to focus on:

Strengthen your fundamental concepts in arithmetic, algebra, and geometry. Use shortcuts and tricks for quick calculations, and aim for regular revisions to remember key formulas and methods.

Don’t forget to practice the previous year’s question papers to see where you stand. It will also help you understand the types of problems being asked. Remember that CAT can be cracked only and only with consistency, so be regular with your practice!
